The platform was not particularly cold, but a shudder went down Lily Evans’ spine. It was those eyes. His eyes. Those cold, dark, penetrating eyes. Why did he always have to stare at her like that? Lily pulled her jacket a little tighter around her and licked her lips nervously. Where was everyone else? For that matter, where was the train? She’d never actually arrived before the train. She silently cursed her sister, Petunia, who insisted her parents drop Lily off early in order to take her shopping for new school clothes. Now here she was, alone on this platform with that slimy git, Snape, and a few nervous looking first years and their families, obviously overeager to get to Hogwarts. She tried giving one of the first years, a strange looking bug eyed girl, a smile, but the girl looked away nervously and continued chewing on her fingernails. So much for making a new friend, Lily thought. She paced around the platform a little as more people trickled in, looking for someone she recognized. She could still feel Snape’s eyes on her as she moved, watching her every step through that curtain of greasy hair. He suddenly left his spot where he was lounging haughtily against a pillar, and started making his way toward her. Though every little hair stood straight up along her neck in cold, scared little goosebumps, she arranged her face into a mask of perfect nonchalance. “Severus,” she said coolly as he approached. “Mudblood,” he spat out. Lily did not so much as flinch. She had dealt with Severus Snape’s verbal abuse for 5 years now and nothing he could say would surprise her now. Before she could come up with some feigned pleasantries, a voice broke in from behind her. “You know Snivellus, if you ever want to get in Lily’s pants, you might want to consider being nice to her. Not that you’d ever have a chance anyways.” Lily did not know what whether to be relieved for the interruption, or more appalled. She never really knew how to react to James Potter. He could be such a jerk, strutting through the halls, knocking first years out of the way while he ruffled his hair in that irresistible way. The fact that he also happened to be the most attractive boy in their year, had not escaped her attention though. Nor did the fact that he was openly and unabashedly in love with her. She turned around to face the newcomer, giving him a coy smile. She just couldn’t help messing with him a little. “Why James your timing is impeccable as always. Have a nice summer?” She blinked her big green eyes at him impishly, once, twice. Yes she could see the effect she was having and it made her smile inside. She was nearly forgetting the creepy way Snape was still staring at her. James’ hand flew instinctively to his hair and he tried to don a confident smile. “Yes, it was wonderful, and yours?” He asked in a deep voice. Lily only murmured a response as she caught sight of Remus lurking shyly behind James and Sirius. Her face brightened involuntarily. “Oh Remus, I almost didn’t see you there!” She was no longer feigning coquettishness, she was truly happy to see Remus Lupin. As they had paced the halls together the previous year on Prefect rounds, she had learned what an interesting boy he was. He pushed up his glasses nervously but returned her exuberant smile. She grabbed his arm firmly and steered him towards the newly arrived train as both James and Severus watched them in dismay.
