Despite its somewhat humble appearance, what do you think is the significance of the archway and the veil? Is it a metaphor for death? Or something more sinister? Why were voices whispering from behind it? Where did Sirius go when he fell through it? And why on earth is it in the Department of Mysteries on a dais? What is it used for?

I say the viel was a curtain that a muggle found at a yardsale and only paid an amazing 10 cents for. When he brought it home he disappeard when he wanted to look out the window one day..... eventually this happened more often and the ministry cought wind of it and took it into their custody. From there they examined it and couldn't figure it out, but they lost a few wizards to it (garsh darn drapperies), so they put it in an area all by itself and put a small do not look what's on the other side sign on it, which, awesomely....... errr I mean.... unfortunately got blasted and trampled int he fight that evening that Sirius was finally gotten rid of.... I swear I mean.... lost to us all.....
Well, the last few lines sould at least cause some debate.

Well, i kind of thought it was like the after place.... Like, where you go when you die. And thats why sirius died. Because he fell into the after place....
Is that stupid?
And, Amy's brother, I'm expecting a mean answer from you, don't worry ;D

Lol he only thinks he's mean Anyway, I think it's like the afterlife too. Maybe wizards don't believe in heaven and hell, I mean, I never hear them talk about it. I think that maybe it's a land of the dead, and if you fall into it before your time, you become one of them, wandering around for forever.

That's what I'm thinking too. That you can't just leave, after you've been there. Because now you know the secrets of the universe But I also think Harry is going back there. To talk to Sirius and to talk to Dumbledore...

no, Harry will talk to Dumbledore through his portrait. I don't think harry will visit behind the Veil cause as you said, you can't go bakc after you're there already. I don't know if JK will even continue with sirius, but it'd be a damn shame not to

This is true, but I don't think we'll ever hear from Sirius again. Too bad, though. We will probably just get an explination as to waht it is and what it does.

well it seems that's where all the deceased go, kind of like the river of the dead in greek mythology, all the dead souls are down there, and if you fall into it you will die too. I'm kinda hoping he's just chilling for a while with James and Lily before he comes back out in Book 7 I <3 Sirius

With the Veil i think that it is a sort of Limbo, people who are behind it are not quite dead but are not living. Its a place where people transistion and if you walk through it you cant go back out the same way.
The dont move on because they were not destined to die therefore their voices can be heard in whispers, maybe they were trying to warn everyone not to go near it or they were asking for their help to get out?
What do you think?

I've got a lot of questions about the veil and I hate thinking about it. Ya'll raise good points, but yer missing the main one. How and why is it there in the first place?
I don't exactly believe Justin's rendition of the old curtain thing. I mean, was it found, built, somehing they couldn't get rid of? Do they use it to torture people for all eternity? What's it's purpose? And if people can't come back out, WHY THE HELL HAVEN'T THEY THROWN VOLDY THROUGH IT?
I hate thinking about the Veil because I'll think about it all night. It sucks really.

The Department Of Mysteries houses mysteries. No one really knows what the Veil is or how it works. That's why it's there. The most obvious explanation for it is that it's a gateway to the underworld (which leads one to wonder about Wizarding religion, if there is any), or possibly even a kind of Limbo. One thing's for certain, once you go through it, you die.
I know, I know, Sirius isn't dead, he'll come back . . . .
But J.K. Rowling even mentioned that he was, in fact, dead. So when you go though the Veil, you die.
They can't just throw Voldemort into it, because of the horcruxes, which make him virtually immortal. If you threw what body he had now, through the Veil, you'd still have other parts of his soul floating around, which could be used to resurrect him.
Now, based on that logic, one would assume that you could throw all of the horcruxes in there and then you'd get rid of him. That's just an assumption because we don't know about horcruxes and what it takes to destroy them.

Daisymiller you gave me an idea, or theory or something.... Book 7 could end with with throwing all of the horcruxes in, including himself (I believe his scar is a horcrux) a sad, but final, way to end the series.

OoOoO Good theory.
But about the veil. I think that we WILL see it again. And that even though sirius IS dead, and won't come out of the veil, we will see it again. Because if Harry doesn't go INSIDE the veil, he'll be ok. So maybe he'll throw the mirror in, and Sirius will be able to get it?

That's a good theory, but if you'll remember, Harry broke the mirror in book 5. He threw it against the wall in his anger.
We won't be seeing Sirius again, I don't think so at least. You can't have too much of a good thing, and that's Sirius' case. We got a taste of him, and she took him away. For emotional effect.
The saddest part of it is, that Sirius was proven innocent to Harry, and had JUST gotten to spend some quality time with him before he got killed. and I think that's what JK was trying to show us. That In the life of Harry Potter, if a family member is close, they're as good as dead.
No, i don't think we'll ever see Sirius again. The veil, maybe, but not Sirius.
