I was surfing some other forums, and came across this question. It's very interesting, let's here what y'all think.
How do you reckon Tom Riddle found the Chamber of Secrets?

He probably did tons of research, snuck into the restricted section a few times... um... maybe his family had something MORE of Salazars...?

Hmm...idk aobut the restricted section theory--cause if it were simple as that, couldn't Dumbledore or anyone else found it too? But I think the Basilisk had something to do with it. You know, maybe he heard it talking to him, since he IS a parselmouth.

But if that were true, why wouldn't Harry have heard it too? He didn't hear it in first year... And he's a parselmouth too...

Well he heard it in 2nd year...and he pry didn't hear it in 1st year cause the Snake wasn't being summoned..
remember, it only comes when called.
Now since that's been said, idk who would have summoned it for Tom. maybe he heard it and turned the basilisk into his own personal hit man-thing

I think that as a decendant of Salazars he would have some sort agenda in finding everything out that he could, and i think he may of found a book of salazars or something, it is also plausible that he is just smart and noticed the snake on the taps?

He probably knew about the Chamber of Secrets from the books that he read. I wouldn't put it past him to actually go through the books and read everything about Salazar Slytherin the day he knew he was a descendant of the latter. Anyway, that was how he found out about the Horcruxes, wasn't it?

I think that Salazar left a clue somewhere in one of the books that he owned (personal library) and put some sort of charm on it so it couldn't be destroyed. Then no one bothered to look until Tom Riddle came about, he would want to know all he could about his noble heritage after his bad childhood. So Tom found it, being one of the few to be truely interested in his heritage.

I'm not sure, I mean, the research of Salazar thing is very good. And that's probably how it happened. But I just can't see what book would have that in it. If Tom could find it, surely Dumbledore could? I don't think it was in a book that he found out. But if not a book, then what?

Yes, but if It was probably one of Salazar's personal belongings, then only a true descendant of Slytherin would be able to find it.
Or maybe he just heard about the Chamber, made a few assumptions and tried calling the basilisk to see if he was right?
