We saw in Book 5 just how cruel James Potter can be, but in all earlier books he is glorified.
So what do you think of him? Is he a git and a bully, or is he a witty Gryffindor Hero, and SHOULD be glorified as thus?

I don't like him much cause he was so nasty to Snape >: | Of course I'm not saying he deserved to die but Snape's existance is absolutely miserable now and I blame it mostly on Potter. And somewhat on Sirius. Cause if they hadn't teased he might have never turned to Voldemort and people wouldn't view him in such a bad light now

I feel the same way, I think James was a total git. No wonder Snape hates Harry so much!! James was brutal to Snape, though I'm not saying he didnt' ALWAYS deserve it...but I think James was more of the bully in this round. It reminds me of the hate between Draco and Harry, except flipped around. James probably bashed Snape more than Snape bashed James, and it was probably because he was such a bookworm and got better scores in class than he did.
jerk!

Well, with how much skill Snape is blessed with (as he showed with his counter curses and such in the most recent installment) you'd think he would have stuck up for himself at least by countering a few.... but he took it like a female dog.... I like Snape, but he's got about as much backbone as a jelly fish when he was a kid, no wonder he was targeted.

AHHH I don't particularly LIKE James.. Actually, I don't like him much at all.. Okay, so I think he's a PANDA JERK! I think he's pretty much the reason Snape turned out as he did. Arrrhh!

I like James. I love James. I don't particualarly feel like arguing my point at the moment, mainly because its 1:30, and I'm getting up early to work tomorrow... But I'll be back.

James is a good guy, and a heck of a lot better guy then Snape, who is the reason you all seem to hate James.
I could argue this till I am blue in the face, bring it on!
Snape was messed up llllllllllong before James came along, don't even try to deny that.
You compared Snape and James to Harry and Draco, with the roles being reversed so I pose a question: Why is it okay for Draco to pick on Harry, and it isn't for James to pick on Snape?

I never said it's ok for Draco to pick on Harry, in fact, it's a very rotten thing to do. The two situatsions are RELATED, but not the same. For example.
Snape you can tell was a tortured little boy. He seemed much like a Hermit who kept to himself and didn't like to socialize.
James was the total opposite and since they were in rival houses, James picked on Snape. A lot.
And the more James picked on Snape, the worse he became (I won't deny that he wasn't already messed up before James got to him...but there is such a thing as making a situation worse). And Snape probably got his fair share of revenge, but the way it seems to me, James was just plain cruel as to where Snape was vengeful and wanted to get him back for how he tortured him (not ACTUAL torture, silly, mental!)
***
Now, Harry and Draco have a SIMILAR relationship. But the situations are highly unidentical.
Draco is like James in the sense that he'll go out of his way just to make Harry miserable.
Harry is like Snape because he came from a bad family-life (though maybe not as bad as Snape) and just wants to avoid people like Draco.
The difference is, while Draco taunts Harry, Harry grows some backbone and Harry instead of being tortured about it, sticks up for himself and makes Draco look like the assh*le in the end.
You would never see the memory of Draco breaking Harry's nose in his haunting memories--they would be categorized as embarrassing most likely.

I think James Potter is a bonafied git. That is all.
Okay, I'll add some reasoning I suppose.
I completely agree with most of ya'll on how Snape/James relates to Draco/Harry. It really does. Snape was a tortured soul, both at home and at school.
Yeah, he was "messed up" before he got to school, I wonder why. He didn't have the greatest home life. And James didn't help.
James went out of his way to pick on Snape when Snape would do nothing to him. Snape merely defended himself.
Therefore JAMES POTTER IS A GIT (WHO LATER IN LIFE DID SOMETHING BRAVE AND NOT HORRIBLE.)

I think he is a git. He may have changed his ways after graduation but it doesn't make up for the bullying in Hogwarts. For all the things those boys did to Snape I'm suprised he isn't more messed up!

wow.. contradicting with people is fun. So.i don't think James is a git.. but i don't think he's some great Gryffindor Hero either.. He was a stupid kid. BIG DEAL. I proudly say i've picked on my share of people.mostly freshman as i'm an upperclassman... so maybe James ruffed Snape up a little in school...there are plenty of people who had it worse and turned out alright. so i guess i'm a highly opinionated Neutral
